Bamboo and Cane Development Institute (BCDI)

The Bamboo & Cane Development Institute (BCDI) in Agartala, Tripura, was established in 1974 by the Ministry of Textiles, Government of India and is one of the oldest institutes in the country, with the mission to promote research, training, and innovation in the bamboo and cane sector. Recently, BCDI has marked a significant milestone by celebrating its 50th anniversary in 2024. Over the years, it has successfully trained artisans, facilitated technology adoption, and supported value-added bamboo product development, contributing significantly to the local and national bamboo industry. Its achievements include advancements in bamboo treatment and preservation, engineered bamboo products, and collaborations with national and international organizations. The institute has been instrumental in bridging the gap between traditional craftsmanship and modern industrial applications, ensuring that bamboo-based enterprises remain competitive in global markets.
