NECTAR has been using satellite imagery and UAV acquired data for development of technology based Agricultural Crop Insurance product since 2015 Rabi season under Government of India " Pradhanmantri Fasal Bima Yojana " which has emphasis on use of mobile and satellite technology to facilitate accurate assessment and quick settlement of claims, a number of Crop Insurance companies were provided Agriculture Crop Analysis services from NECTAR for Agricultural crop Acreage & Productivity estimation and Damage Assessment in different geographical areas.
NECTAR has provided above services to insurance companies during both Kharif & Rabi for the year 2015-16 and 2016-17 (four crop seasons). About 50 Million hectares of crop land in different states of India has been covered. Village level analysis for Wheat, Paddy, Groundnut, Cotton, Bajra, Guar and Soyabean was done by the Centre. There were issues of crop loss due to poor rainfall / drought/ flooding and unreliable CCEs in few states i.e Tamilnadu, Maharashtra & Gujarat. The estimates provided by NECTAR were used by insurance companies and states as well to resolve the disputes /discrepancies.
NECTAR has accomplished a Technology Outreach program launched for North Eastern Students by conducting a scientific study on damage analysis of Potato crop due to unseasonal rainfall during third week of Feb 2019 in WB under "Pradhan Mantri Fasal Bima Yojana (PMFBY)" using Remote Sensing Technology (RST) for about 12,035sq km area of two districts in a record time 25 days with all field work, analysis and submission of Interim and Final report to NIC. The project was taken up to provide industrial exposure to North eastern students on remote sensing and GIS applications technology for crop analysis based on satellite image data.
NIC entrusted NECTAR to map the affected area and to assess the yield loss at GP level using satellite, field and CCE data and assess the actual damage, productivity, production and loss to the tuber yield in a scientific way using Remote Sensing Technique
Accurate classification plays important role, while predicting productivity/production. The approximate potato crop area for Hooghly district has been estimated 88,874 ha. The same acreage map has been estimated for 213 GP.
While, the potato area for West Medinipur has been estimate 54,382 Ha. There are total 205 GPs in the district of West Medinipur, however productivity and production extracted for 169 GPs, rest are non-crop are.
The expected Tuber production in the Hooghly district for 2019 is around 28, 27,652 tons, but due to the unseasonal rainfall the net expected production is around 28,19,397 tons, figuring a total loss of 8,255 tons.
Similarly, the expected Tuber production in the West Medinipur district for 2019 is around 12,55,847 tons, but due to the unseasonal rainfall the net expected production is around 12,54,760 tons, figuring a total loss of 1,087 tons.
